Madonna Calls “Born This Way” A “Wonderful Way To Redo My Song”
Lady Gaga's release of "Born This Way" sparked controversy nearly a year ago when critics commented on its striking resemblance to Madonna's 1989 hit, "Express Yourself." As Gaga and Madonna fans waged an internet war on nearly every social media outlet, with Mother Monster herself commenting, Madonna remained silent on the issue.
At last, Madge took time out of her busy schedule prepping for her upcoming M.D.N.A album and "W.E." film to chat with Newsweek and dropped a few not-so amused words. "I thought, 'What a wonderful way to redo my song," she noted. "I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was… interesting."
In another interview with ABC News, Madonna addressed the Gaga controversy, "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done...When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio ... I said, 'that sounds very familiar' ... It felt reductive." Miss Madge, known for her curt and crisp replies to anything about anyone taking a page out of her book, was dully asked if "reductive" was a good or bad thing. She laconically answered, "Look it up."
